Our
History
Part 1 – Beginnings
The Shabbona Methodist Church was organized in 1887 by Reverend Norman Karr; at the time the small town of Shabbona had a lumber mill, a post office, hardware and grocery store as well as a school. In 1917 the Decker and Shabbona churches were overseen by the same pastor.
Part II – Over the Years
In 1946-48 the church building was moved back from the road and the former horse and buggy barn was removed. In 1953 a well was drilled and restrooms were installed. In 1956 art glass windows, new church pews and carpet was put in. In 1968 the church name was changed to Shabbona United Methodist Church following the union of the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren Churches. In 1991 the United Methodist Women’s group started a pie project–something that continues to be a major fundraiser today!
Part III – A Present & Future Outlook
In 2020 we became Shabbona Riverside Church. Although we are no longer connected with the United Methodist denomination, we are thankful for the rich history, spiritual guidance and support the Methodist Church provided over the years. And building off our heritage we intend to march forward as a family of believers that honor God’s Word and faithfully shares Christ’s love in our local community and beyond!
